Karen – Dance -Djembe and Dununbas
Karen is our amazing dancer she has been drumming and dancing with drumbumba since 2014 , always full of energy and has a great love for the drumming culture, her dance style is from the Caribbean
“I grew up in the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, where music, dance, and drums are a part of everyday life. Different rhythms and dances infuse the island culture; from the 19th century French ball room beguine, to Gwo Ka ( meaning big drum ),created by enslaved African people during the 17th century. Gwoka is used as a form of communication and expression via music, song, dance and cultural practices to celebrate and pass on the stories of Guadeloupean people and society. Zouk, salsa, reggae and calypso are also danced in Guadeloupe. Each year Carnival is held over several days in similar style to Brazil.
My love for music, drumming and dancing has originated from these sources. This fills my heart with joy and happiness.
I first met Debie from Drumbumba at the Palm Creek Folk Fetival. We were performing dances from different countries with kids from multicultural backgrounds, countries and ethnicities. Drumbumba offered to accompany the kids as they danced. This is how I came to dance for the group.
Subsequently, I bought a djembe from Debie’s teacher Lansana, and learned to play West African rhythms. In 2023 I then also began to play the dunduns.
My love of dancing and playing music inspires me to share this happiness with our audience.
